IMG_36081-227x300I am a full time: mom/yogini/dancer/beach lover and I feel super blessed with the opportunity of living at Manuel Antonio National Park area, and to also work at Holis Wellness Center. When you are a Yoga instructor your life is beautiful, but also pretty demanding physically, and if you chase a toddler half of your day and your back is already in trouble after breast-feeding, the best thing that can happen to you is a Vayu Aerial Yoga class with Ana Prada.

I met Ana in a *GYROKINESIS® class some months before our first teacher training with her, where my dear friend Carolina Cabanas who owns a Aerial Dance School in San José recommended us to work together. I have to admit it has been a real pleasure! Ana is an extraordinary friend and teacher.

After some GYROKINESIS® open classes, we hosted our first Teacher Training in Vayu Aerial Yoga at Holis Wellness Center. I have to admit that because our studio was still under construction back in February 2014, Ana took on a real challenge in introducing myself and Evelina Bolognini to the principles of connection, expansion and the opening of such a lovely practice.

My soul, mind and body definitely changed after a 40-hour certification!!! My posture improved a lot while my spine stress was released daily during that week. As our manual says: “Inverting the body while suspended in the air not only provides many physical benefits such as spinal decompression, it also expands the mind by creating confidence, overcoming fear and allowing a change in the standard physical perception.” It really did! My entire being was in a magical state, more wise, listening carefully, and open with great confidence. In addition to an amazing teacher training, the lovely and warm weather of our summer time at the Costa Rican Pacific Coast, made me feel like I was going through a full detox process to say the least!!

So we decided then and there to start sharing this opportunity with other friends, yogis and yoginis, by hosting this event every year!!

The second edition of Vayu Aerial YTT at Holis Wellness Center started on February 2015 with a very nice weathering of powerful athletes: dancers, aerial dancers, yoga instructors and moms, from Costa Rica, Colombia, Cánada and the United States.

We opened our practice with a warm restorative class. Ana helped us to connect rapidly through Pranayama. It is indeed the “Control of live force,” this steady awareness of breathing that helped me feel something authentic…connected deeply to myself.

By the time we lifted up the swings for the higher level posture sequence we were already in full “Dharana” (concentration): in love with that moment of true joy and acceptance of present, ready for anything, really. I believe this happens because through the diaphragmatic breath our energy flow tunes within us, and with her special request of understanding the connective tissue behavior, we were almost whispering during exhalation, softening the skin in our neck & externum area. Almost like *Ujjayi breath but also exhaling through the mouth, like softly whispering our breath out, and as a Yoga instructor I love somebody else leading my pranayama and so I can enjoy the flow.

I will say that with these types of breathing techniques, amazing class sequences and vast knowledge of anatomy are the signature of Ana’s Teacher Training. Through her deep anatomical understanding she leads everyone to feel and move like fascia (connective fibber) this big “only one” bag of intelligent tissue wrapping our body, muscles, nerves and organs together, and is this approach that really makes a difference.

Screen-Shot-2015-10-03-at-1.47.32-PMUp in high swing postures we focus a lot on applying all this beautiful theory on transitions, the importance of “going from one posture to another” with sense of alignment and expansion of our energy in the space, Allowing Vayu custom swings to support us for a deeper level of self trust, because when we trust we are more free to let go and honor ourselves. It’s funny that some friends that also practice yoga ask me; why do you want the swing to help you? why not practice by yourself as usual?” and my answer of why I do love this practice is that sometimes in order to fulfill the conscious idea of “letting go” you need to “hold on”.

In our training I also learned that our Vayu Aerial Yoga swing is a simple reminder of zero gravity points and the relationship between myself and the fifth element “the space.” Ana’s first day of class ended with “flying savasana” or “floating relaxation”: just picture yourself after a day of self discovery, suspended a few feet from the floor in a turquoise or purple hammock, feeling the breeze of a beautiful summer day in Costa Rica, and fully experiencing “dhyana” (meditative absorption). It is a priceless moment, almost like going back to the womb.

As an Aerial Yoga instructor now after lots of hours of practice and teaching …I am always learning from every single class and student and blessed with the opportunity of having such an amazing teacher training and such an extraordinary instructor. Let´s keep flying Costa Rica!!

IMG_4692The next 40-hour Vayu Aerial Teacher Training at Holis Wellness Center with Ana Prada will be taking place Jan 09 – 17, 2016. This training is designed for people that have previous training and actively teach in any of these disciplines: Yoga, Pilates, Aerial, Dance Gyrotonic, GYROKINESIS® or any other movement techniques. A basic knowledge of anatomy is required.

*The GYROKINESIS® method is a movement method that gently works the entire body, opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion, and creating functional strength through rhythmic, flowing movement sequences. It is an original, and unique movement method which has benefits & qualiies similar to those found in Yoga, Tai Chi, gymnastics, and dance.

*Ujjayi is a diaphragmatic breath, which first fills the lower belly (activating the first and second chakras), rises to the lower rib cage (the third and fourth chakras), and finally moves into the upper chest and throat. The technique is very similar to the three-part Tu-Na breathing found in Taoist Qigong practice.Inhalation and exhalation are both done through the nose. The “ocean sound” is created by moving the glottis as air passes in and out. As the throat passage is narrowed so, too, is the airway, the passage of air through which creates a “rushing” sound. The length and speed of the breath is controlled by the diaphragm, the strengthening of which is, in part, the purpose of ujjayi. The inhalations and exhalations are equal in duration, and are controlled in a manner that causes no distress to the practitioner.
